Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is The First Tee?
The First Tee is a World Golf Foundation initiative dedicated to providing young people of all backgrounds an opportunity to develop, through golf and character education, life-enhancing values such as honesty, integrity and sportsmanship. The intent is to offer opportunities for improvement in the quality of life and create a platform where children can increase their potential for success.

2. Are there any fees associated for golf instruction?
To ensure that all youth have the opportunity to play golf, no fees are charged. The First Tee asks all families to make a donation to support the cost of instruction. The First Tee is a registered 501c3 with the Internal Revenue Service.

3. Where is The First Tee offered?
Needwood, Laytonsville, and Sligo Creek Public Golf Courses. Additionally, we have affiliate relationships with Olney Golf Park and Montgomery Village Golf Club.

4. Who are the golf instructors?
All five The First Tee program sites always have a PGA Professional on-site as well as other dedicated instructors and volunteers.

5. Who can participate in The First Tee?
Any interested Montgomery County youth between the ages of 8-17 years. Keeping in mind, The First Tee’s purpose is to introduce the sport of golf, providing instruction and play to children and youth in Montgomery County, who otherwise would not have these opportunities. Typically these will be young people who have one or more barriers to accessing the sport of golf, including limited family income, lack of transportation, absence of adult or sibling encouragement or incentives, etc.

6. What should my child wear to classes?
Comfortable clothes! No “uniform” is required but the courses do prefer that golfers do not wear jeans, open –toe shoes or shoes with any kind of heel or cleats. The important thing is to wear clothes that are easy to move in and are breathable when the weather is hot.

7. How many days a week does the program meet?
Depends on the site, typically it is two days per week. During the fall and spring seasons, it is after school and in the summer it is usually mid-morning.

8. Do I need golf equipment?
No equipment is provided. The First Tee provides all the necessary clubs, balls, tees and other instructional equipment. Participants are free to bring any clubs or other equipment they already own.

9. Why is golf so important to junior golfers?
There is no better training ground for the game of life than the golf course. Experiences encountered there develop and strengthen character traits that serve us well in our daily l

10. What character traits does golf develop?
Golf is a game of honor. Its basic tenet of playing the course as you find it and the ball as it lies develops such desirable qualities as integrity, perseverance, patience, courtesy, respect for others, personal responsibility, and, especially, self-esteem.

11. How can I help?
There are numerous ways to be involved with The First Tee. The two primary ways volunteers support the organization is on the golf course as an assistant coach or a one on one mentor with a First Tee participant. Volunteer assistant coaches help with the daily golf skill instruction at session days for youth ranging in age from 8-17 years old. Mentors meet with a student twice a month for practice sessions and/or a nine-hole round of golf.
